It is with profound sadness that the European Platform of Women Scientists EPWS announces the passing of the Platform’s first President Dr. Adelheid Ehmke (2005-2009), who left us on September 23, 2026, at the age of 78.
Her leadership contributed to shape the foundation of our Platform, ensuring that the voices of women scientists were heard, respected, and valued at the highest levels.
Beyond her valuable contribution to EPWS, Adelheid Ehmke, a biologist by training, was a distinguished academic, serving as Vice-President of TU Braunschweig, Germany, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, Germany, and Vice-Rector of the University of Luxembourg.
Just last year, on the occasion of the EPWS Annual Conference held in Brussels in November 2025, Adelheid sent EPWS a warm and inspiring message of support and congratulations—a cherished reminder of her enduring commitment and affection for the Platform she helped build.
We owe her a debt of gratitude. Her legacy will continue to guide, inspire, and drive the mission of EPWS forward.
On behalf of the entire EPWS community, our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and colleagues.
Rest in peace, Adelheid.
