W20 Brazil Summit 2024 in Rio de Janeiro

During an important and exciting moment of the W20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, on the stage of the Municipal Theatre, the delegates of the 19 countries + Europe formally delivered the Communiqué to the representatives of the Brazilian government.

From 30 September to 2 October 2024, the EPWS president (Lucia Martinelli) participated in the W20 Brazil Summit in Rio de Janeiro, as a representative of the European Delegation (EU W20) led by Tamara Dancheva. The W20 is the G20’s official independent engagement group focused on promoting gender equity and women’s economic empowerment. Along 2024, the W20 delegates had important policy discussions around the 5 key thematic areas for this year’s Presidency: women entrepreneurship; women in STEM; the care economy;
combating gender-based violence; climate justice. The result was a document draft with recommendations to advocate for their inclusion in the final G20 declaration. The W20 of Rio de Janeiro was the final important meeting where the delegates agreed on the final version of
this document (known as “Communiqué”) and formally delivered the Communiqué in the hands of the representatives of the Brazilian government.

Notable speakers at the W20 summit included the Chair of W20 Brazil, the Brazilian Ministers of Racial Equality and Women, the G20 Brazil Sherpa, the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the Secretary for Women of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the Mayor of Rio de
Janeiro and the Secretary of Women’s Policies and Promotion of Rio de Janeiro.

The representatives of the European delegation of W20 (EU W20) at the Rio de Janeiro Summit were (from left to right) Lucia Martinelli (EPWS president and member of the Association Donne e Scienza) and Tamara Dancheva, head of the EU W20 delegation.

 

The Communiqué calls upon G20 leaders to act on the recommended actions across five priority areas:

-Entrepreneurial Women: Access to Financing, Capital, and Markets
-Care Economy
-Women in STEM
-Women and Climate Justice
-Ending Violence against Women and Girls

Following the summit, representatives of the W20 delegations were invited at the Consulate General of Italy in Rio de Janeiro to report to Consul Massimiliano Iacchini on the Communique and be informed about the Italian Embassy activities, and Tamara Dancheva (head of the EU W20) met the Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union in Brazil, Marian Schuegraf.
