The workshop “Strategies to Improve Research Career Sustainability in Italy, Europe and Beyond” took place in Bari, Italy, on 3 November 2026.
The workshop was organised by the Italian Research Staff Association (ItalianRSA) and the University of Bari (UNIBA), in collaboration with the International Consortium of Research Staff Associations (ICoRSA), the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) , and the European Platform of Women in Science (EPWS).
The workshop addressed the issue of gender equality in research careers, highlighting the challenges and opportunities facing researchers and in particular women pursuing research careers in Europe. It also presented the results of the EU-funded project SECURE – Sustainable Careers for Researcher Empowerment.
During the European Panel, EPWS President Lucia Martinelli delivered a presentation entitled “Making Research Careers Sustainable and Inclusive: Protecting Rights, Promoting Decent Work”. Her central argument was that the sustainability of research careers is fundamentally a question of rights. Against this background, she highlighted the important role EPWS can play in promoting decent working conditions, independent protection mechanisms, solidarity networks, inclusive leadership, and policies based on disaggregated data.
