Lígia Amâncio

Lígia Amâncio graduated in France in Psychology and Education and obtained her PhD in Sociology at ISCTE-IUL in Portugal where she pursued her career and became emeritus professor in 2019.  The publication of her PhD research in 1994 (Masculino e Feminino. A construção social da diferença / Male and Female. The social construction of difference, 3rd edition in 2011) marked the development of gender studies in Portugal. More recently, her research interests focus on the discrimination of women at work in high status professions such as science, politics, medicine, the judiciary.

A construção social da diferença / Male and Female. The social construction of difference, 3rd edition in 2011) marked the development of gender studies in Portugal. More recently, her research interests focus on the discrimination of women at work in high status professions such as science, politics, medicine, the judiciary. She integrated the team responsible for the first survey of the Portuguese scientific community (results published in 1995), participated in the Portuguese research team of the ISSP (International Social Survey program) surveys on Family and Gender in 2004 and 2014 and chaired the Portuguese team of the H2020 Coordination and Support Action SAGE (Systematic Action for Gender Equality, 2016-2019), among other research projects. She was also President of the Commission for Equality and Women’s Rights (1996-1998) of the Portuguese government, member of the European Research Advisory Board (2001-2004) and Vice-President of the Foundation for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and Technology (2006-2012). She retired in 2018.
