The GIGA seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The position is part of the GIGA’s agenda to internationalise and globalise research. We particularly welcome an inter-disciplinary approach. The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social-science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. It combines this region specific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, growth and development, peace and security, and power and ideas.
Applications are invited for a full-time position, with a contract of 2 years, preferably starting 1 August 2016. The salary is commensurate with TV-AVH / TVöD EG 13. The position is part of the GIGA’s agenda to internationalise and globalise research. It is dedicated to innovative research on different concepts of global order, security, governance, or development in Africa, Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East. We particularly welcome an inter-disciplinary approach.
The successful candidate will:
– engage with theoretical content, historical experiences, and philosophical traditions of at least one of the above-mentioned world regions;
– apply and further develop his/her research such that it is a wide fit with the GIGA’s approach to scholarship (see https://www.giga-hamburg.de/en/publication/because-they-matter);
– have the opportunity to pursue a targeted publication strategy;
– work closely with the President of the GIGA and the central staff;
– be an integrated member of the Institute’s research units; participate in and contribute to a stimulating international and inter-disciplinary community of researchers.
Your qualifications:
– Outstanding doctorate in the social sciences, economics, or related fields
– Excellent academic record in relevant fields demonstrated by publications in renowned peer-reviewed journals and/or leading publishing houses
– Excellent methodological skills, experience in inter-disciplinary work as well as theoretical competence – Successful record in third-party funding acquisition is an asset
– English-language proficiency; language skills relevant to research regions are an asset
