W1 professorship (with tenure track to W3) in »Natural Hazards and Structural Resilience«

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an internationally established university with 160 years of history that is rooted in the Bauhaus tradition. It combines science, technology, art and design. This approach determines the self-image of the faculties of Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Art and Design, and Media. In addition to their subject-specific functions, the faculties are also committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and to the interpenetration between art, science and practise.

As part of the Joint Federal Government-Länder Tenure-Track Programme to promote young research talent, the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Bauhaus-Universität is seeking to fill a W1 professorship (with tenure track to W3) in »Natural Hazards and Structural Resilience«

Under this programme, the job advertisement is aimed at junior academics early on in their careers. The recruitment requirements of the Thuringian Higher Education Act (§ 89 ThürHG) apply.

The professorship is initially limited to three years. This is expected to be extended by a further three years, following a positive tenure evaluation. If a further evaluation after six years is also positive, then the W1 professorship will be converted into a W3 professorship without an additional job advertisement.

The professorship is a part of the Institute of Structural Engineering and deals with the assessment and the evaluation of structural risk in the context of natural hazards in research as well as in teaching. Applicants should have dealt extensively with structural modelling, simulation, and measurement of extreme load effects from natural hazards. Focus areas of research are related to the design of engineering structures associated with such loading scenarios, as well as the evaluation and optimization of existing structural facilities and infrastructure systems. This includes prediction models for the quantification of structural safety and resilience in the context of complex hazards (e.g. multi-hazard cascades) as well as global and regional transformation processes and the effects of climate change. Practical experience in the design of challenging engineering structures is of advantage.

The basic requirement is a doctoral degree of outstanding quality in the field of the advertised professorship. The professorship is expected to support the degree programmes of »Natural Hazards and Risks in Structural Engineering« (Master) und »Bauingenieurwesen« (Bachelor and Master) and strengthen the field of structural engineering. The research topics outlined above should be directly reflected in teaching. Excellent didactic abilities and experience in teaching in English language are fundamental requirements for successful work at our institution. The willingness to learn the German language within a period of three years is expected. Within the framework of a qualification and development program, amongst others, the required didactic and language skills can be further extended.

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers you appropriate resources to enable you to independently structure your professorship, including equipment, staffing in the form of an employee position (75 %), and a share in secretarial capacity. We also support you with the performance of your duties via a wide range of advisory services and promotional funding.

We are looking for an individual who pairs excellence in their discipline with an openness to other subject areas, and who will play a part in further developing and shaping the university with an awareness of art and science’s responsibility to society. They are therefore expected to participate in inter-faculty collaborations and interdisciplinary study courses.

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar pursues an equal-opportunity, family-friendly human resources policy; this includes part-time models. The university’s strategic goals include increasing the proportion of women in teaching and research. The university was awarded a »TOTAL E-QUALITY« rating, and was given the title of »Gleichstellung: Ausgezeichnet!« (»Gender Equality: Outstanding!«) under the Federal Government-Länder Women Professors Programme. Bauhaus-Universität Weimar would therefore like to expressly invite qualified female academics to submit applications.
