After graduating in Mathematics in 1979, Patricia Lampens spent one year at the Geneva Observatory with a Swiss grant (1983-84), and was lecturer-observer at the Boyden Observatory, University of Bloemfontein, South-Africa (1984-85). She obtained her PhD in Science, with a specialization in Astronomy, from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KULeuven) in 1988.

Currently, she is a staff astronomer at the Royal Observatory of Belgium, where she conducts research in the field of observational stellar astrophysics and holds a position as head of Department. She is also a guest lecturer at the Université catholique de Louvain (UcL).

Patricia Lampens is co-founder of BeWiSe, the Belgian Network for Women in Science for which she acted as the Secretary during the first years (2003-2008). She contributed actively in the organisation of all BeWiSe annual meetings till present.
She currently is an advisory member of the Steering Committee and chief editor of the BeWiSe Newsletters.
