INDEX is a project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework programme.
INDEX stands for ” Indirect Excitons” and is about fundamental physics and applications. It started in November 2011 and will run for four years with an impressive network of 13 academic and industrial partners and a budget of almost 3 million euros.
Indirect excitons are bosonic quasi-particles in semiconductors with uniqueproperties: they have long lifetime and spin-relaxation time, can travel over large distances before recombination, can be cooled down to low temperatures and form a quantum gas, and can be controlled by voltage in-situ. Due to these properties, they form a model system both for the studies of fundamental properties of light and matter and for the development of conceptually new excitonic devices.
INDEX is an “Initial training Network” for training and career development of young researchers.
